Greetings Anglers,
Spring has finally arrived although we are still having spells of rain and snow throughout California. Rainfall has been well over normal for all parts of California, more important, the snow pack is at record levels with more to come. Snow pack in Mammoth has been extraordinary this year, they are actually expecting to have skiing on July 4th!! When the Mammoth snow pack starts to melt this year, we can expect some cold and strong flows to hit Hot Creek and accordingly, wash out a lot of the weeds which have choked the stream in the past 2~3 years. With the stocking 5 months ago, we can expects some amazing fishing this year on the creek. Use a light Fly outfit, 1wt to 3wt outfits will be perfect to manage the smaller Browns and even the larger Rainbows, both of which have already gained 2~3 inches since their planting, although many of the planters seem to have disappeared in the past couple of weeks, which could be due to avian predation. Proper Catch and Release methods will help immeasurably by allowing fish to reach breeding size and increase populations.
Opening day is on the 29th this year, the last Saturday of the month and I’ll be spending several days checking out the streams in the Eastern Sierra in preparation to guide you this year and get you some stamps in your CDFW Passports and for the Heritage Trout awards.
Cheers and Tight Lines!! |
